I would give this book 2 and a half stars if they had that, but posted 2 because of the things that kept annoying me. One was how extremely frequently (36 references would be too much even for something good.) June ate or longed for Ding Dongs, which was kind of nauseating. (she doesn’t eat much else in the entire book) Even worse was giving them to her cat. Chocolate is toxic to cats (dogs, too)! Some of the symptoms that can be caused by chocolate are vomiting, diarrhea, muscle rigidity, rapid breathing, seizures, cardiac failure, weakness, and coma. I love cats. Please have June stop doing this! Mr. Prince Charming is the best character in the book.It also could have used more editing to correct spelling and grammatical errors. “Shee”, “sac” instead of “sack”, “you’d never knew”, “I grabbed of couple of ingredients”, etc. (To be fair, many correct usages of “blonde” and “its” vs. “it’s” and “déjà vu”.) There are a few problems with continuity, too. E.g., June sits on the couch, and then jumps out of bed.
The book was easy to read except for the above issues; they kept jerking me out of the story. (And I do not LOOK FOR errors – they jump out and are distracting.)
The good part: It was an amusing light story with magic and mystery, and didn’t contain graphic gore like some mysteries do. However, the character portrayals were a bit light and fluffy. And the main character, June Heal, keeps doing things that are really stupid and being rude or cruel. We all occasionally speak or act without thinking, but she does that too much. But, on the whole, I liked this book for times when I want something light rather than deep and meaningful literature. Cute book cover design.

A Charming Crime A Cozy Paranormal Mystery Magical Cures Mystery Series Book 1 edition by Tonya Kappes Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I really want to like this series so I stuck it out but on book three I couldn't take it anymore! This book could have been written by a 12 year old for the lack of maturity and Grammer. Then this girl in the book is always fainting, she's probably got brain damage from all those blackouts. Then there's the ad nauseum amount of ding ding this chick eats. By now she'd have diabetes or dead from all the preservatives in the sugary snack. And no mention of food except for lasagna in the first book. Save your time or money for something better.
A Charming Crime was interesting and it has some potential.
This first book in the Magical Cures Mystery series was a crazy irritating mystery mess. I felt like I was being thrown all over the place with all the different information coming at me all at once.
Our heroine June was frustrating as a character and all she eats are Ding Dongs. All most every page the author has her picking up a Ding Dong to eat. She’s bothered, lets have her eat a Ding Dong. She’s feeling overwhelmed, lets have her eat a Ding Dong. Does this girl not eat anything else?
June also finds her mother, Darla’s Diary. Does June sit down and read it? Nope. This Diary has a tone of information in it about Whispering Falls, Junes magical abilities, and more. If she had read it, well she would have been better prepared for the weirdness of Whispering Falls.
Then we have the town, Whispering Falls, that is a magical community only for magical people to live in. Ok, so this town sounds cool, but they have all these weird ass laws. They where coming at me left and right and I couldn’t keep up with them. June was given a packet to read about the town and their laws, which she had to sign, and she never sat down and read it. By the end of the story the town is going to change some of the laws. Which is good and for the better, but it felt like the author wanted the storyline to go one way and for it to do that she had to change her laws. Didn't feel well thought out on the authors part.
Last, the murder mystery investigation. Why was her friend, Oscar, who is the police officer of Whispering Falls not investigating? Why was June running around doing the investigation? And, last I have to mention her plan to catch the killer was not thought out. I shook my head at her plan…
All I wanted was a fun paranormal cozy mystery to dive into and A Charming Crime left me feeling frustrated with everything. This book was not for me. If the blurb intrigues you, I urge you to give it a shot. Just because it did not work for me does not mean it won’t for you.
Rated 2 Stars
